MATTHEW DAVENPORT: With DWI charges, I represent a broad range of people. Occasionally somebody that has a prior conviction, that's had a prior charge, that has another one pending, but more often it's somebody that's facing a DWI for the first time.
A conviction can be a deal breaker in some careers. If somebody's trying to go, for instance, into law enforcement, criminal justice, that's it for them. A DWI conviction ends that. With some graduate schools, some professional schools, they will not accept you with a DWI conviction.
If you're under 21 and you get a DWI, you really need the help of a professional because it can affect you in ways that it doesn't affect someone who's of legal drinking age.
In my years in the DA's office, I got to know the policies and the procedures followed by the prosecutors. The only way to know whether a case is provable is to go out and do your own investigating. I like to go out to the scene. I like to see where were the field sobriety tests conducted. My goal in every DWI is to win it and get my client out of it.
